Flagfox helps Mozilla Firefox users find out the geographical location of a website's server by displaying a flag of the detected nationality within the address bar, just next to the URL. This piece of information can be used further in order to search for legal aspects and other data.

The advantage of Flagfox is that it can accurately detect the country where the web server is actually located, even though the domain name indicates otherwise.

Since it is not based on Internet top-level domains (or TLD codes), but on an internal database of IP addresses that is updated periodically, its reliability and precision are significantly enhanced. In such cases, the addon displays a pop-up message to ensure you that this is not a mistake.

Once the extension is installed in the browser, you will surely notice the new flag icon that appears when accessing a new webpage. Clicking on it automatically opens Geotool, an online application which can be used for viewing a detailed map of the detected location, along with information concerning the country of origin, the region, city, geographical coordinates, IP address and ISP.

The 'Options' section is where you can configure the list of external tools that are available in the right-click menu and create new custom actions. These include lookup tools, search engines, whois and traceroute sites, URL parsers, rating and site advisers, checkers and verifiers to determine the security of the executed code and the website's reputation.

Thereby, Flagfox provides access to various applications that help you get more information about the servers you access and filter the websites you navigate to.

Each tool can be assigned a suggestive name, a certain access mode (click, double-click etc.), as well as a key combination, for faster access. Links can be opened either in a new tab or a new window.

You can take advantage of the features that Flagfox brings in order to check site safety, shorten long URLs, view and copy the IP address and other specific data.

Flagfox 5.2.x

Flagfox Addon For Chrome

Mozilla ended support for Firefox 52 ESR in September of 2018, at which point Flagfox ended its extended support for Flagfox 5.2.x, the final version written for Mozilla’s old XPCOM/XUL API. The final version of that Flagfox branch, version 5.2.11 began detecting its included IP location database as stale at the end of 2018. Running old browsers (or anything based upon them) is dangerous, as you no longer have access to security and stability updates, thus putting yourself and your data at risk. Running old versions of addons has significantly less risk, though in the case of Flagfox, the old IP location database will result in showing flags for where a server used to be, not necessarily where it actually is today. Ideally, everyone should update to the latest versions and move on.

That said, Mozilla decided to set their entire archive of pre-WebExtension versions of addons on fire; the Mozilla Addons site admins deleted all versions of all addons that used any XPCOM/XUL APIs (including hybrids that used both XPCOM/XUL and WebExtension, to provide user data transitions, e.g. Flagfox 5.2.x). As such, this page is now the last remaining place to actually download this old version, so I’m inclined to leave it available here for the time being.

Flagfox For Chrome

Flagfox 5.2.x is the primary method to migrate user actions/settings from all old versions of Flagfox to the format needed for Flagfox 6.x (more info). Manual imports are also possible; inquire on the Flagfox forum if this actually comes up as a problem.

Flagfox 5.2.11 ESR Installation Requirements:
Flagfox 5.2.x ESR requires Firefox 52 ESR, including updates, or a fork based on at least that version, and will not run in later versions of Firefox. Running one of these versions also unfortunately requires disabling of Mozilla’s addon signing requirements, which you can easily do by setting the “xpinstall.signatures.required” preference to false in about:config. Automatic updates are also not available, however upgrading to Firefox 57+ will allow for automatic update to latest Flagfox 6.x+. Hashes are provided below for integrity checking, if desired. As the extended support releases were released after Mozilla shifted to mandatory WebExtension API use, none of the Flagfox 5.2.x ESR versions are codesigned by Mozilla. In case you’re sufficiently paranoid, the final version prior to this extended support period that still got codesigned is also available here, in which case you can leave the signature checking preference set to the default.
