Ask most people if they are a fan of The Wombats and you wont get a concrete response, or at times simply a ‘no’. Ask them if they like the song ‘Moving to New York’, ‘Kill the Director’, or ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’ from the previous album ‘A Guide to Love Loss & Desperation’ (which peaked at number 11 in the UK album charts) and the response is almost always positive – a strange one, but proof that they can write a melodic catchy song for TV and radio. The question is then, have they managed to replicate this on their new album? Or better still gone down a new route? Well, in a way it is a bit of both, you can find the catchy sing-a-long tracks with Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves) (the first single of the album) and Jump into the Fog (the second single). To stereotype it seems more of a brit/indie pop album that again comes with the same jittery bass lines and harmonious repeat chants, but with a different slightly darker more grown up feel. Everything considered there is no doubting this is an enjoyable ‘tap your foot to’ album and it will definitely sell, but I cannot see it going down in history as one of the greats. I’ve rated it with 4 stars due to the popularity its bound to have (it was going to be a 3), so I would say go ahead get yourself a copy.
